Those Architects are announced

Object: Australian Design Centre has appointed Those Architects as the creative force to lead the design of their new William Street Storefront. Those Architects were in a hot contest with other local emerging talents in a closed competition run by Object over the past month. In the end, it was Those Architects’ inventive playful concept that combined transparency, flexibility and accommodated the demands of an existing space that impressed Object.

Anthony Burke, the Head of the School of Architecture at University of Technology Sydney is also the Chairman at Object. He remarked, “Sydney’s emerging architecture studios are producing some of the most innovative work in Australia, and perhaps the world. The Australian Design Centre has represented designers for 50 years and as we embark into the next decade we sought to demonstrate our commitment to the local community and show the rest of the world what we have to offer”.

Established in 2013, Those Architects have quickly become recognised as a studio that deeply understands the complex needs of rapidly transforming organisations. Within 12 months of opening their doors, Those Architects took out major awards this year at the Australian Interior Design Awards for Workplace Design, and the Australian Timber Design Award for Interior Commercial Fitout for the design of tech company Ansadara’s office in the Rocks. Those Architects innovatively negotiated the building’s existing fabric and responded to the needs of a burgeoning company while meeting complex technical requirements.

“As we celebrate our 50th anniversary and enter our new home in 2015 it’s the ripest of times for our organisation to reimagine how we deliver design to our audiences. The opportunity to work with Those Architects on this delivery is incredibly exciting for Object. It’s a perfect juncture as we redefine how we provide experiences to our audiences and what types of spaces we will need for the future,” said Steve Pozel, Object’s Director.

“We see this as a wonderful opportunity to partner with Object to create a new kind of design and art space: highly adaptable, flexible, clever and hardworking, visually engaging and tactile, a space that embodies Object’s values, lifts is profile, draws people to it, and enriches the way the Centre interacts with its many audiences,” said Simon Addinall, co-founder of Those Architects.

William Street Creative Hub

Object’s new location will thrust the design organisation into the cultural density and creativity of Darlinghurst, Surry Hills, and the Sydney CBD. “Those Architects deeply understood the area beyond the building we will inhabit. Their work with us is more than the design of a building. It is the understanding of our desire to be a catalyst for drawing people to William Street and the underutilised Barnett Lane,” said Claire McCaughan, Object’s Head of Programs.

As Object prepares to take over three shopfronts on the ground floor level, it aims to contribute to the busy street life of Darlinghurst. The new home will allow Object to increase its current footprint while improving visibility and public engagement. The Storefront on William Street will continue to be the anchor for the organisation’s national exhibition program and will deliver creative workshops, talks, and events.

The organisation is expected to open the William Street Storefront in May 2015.
