Design Emergency at Tamworth Regional Gallery

The Object team travelled to Tamworth Regional Art Gallery last Friday for a great Design Emergency session with the kids from Tamworth Public School.

The students visited the Resolved: Journeys in Australian Design exhibition and then got stuck into a hands-on workshop and tackled the challenge question of “How do we protect ourselves and feel safe?” The kids came up with some amazing solutions drawn from their daily lives, creating models and collages to reflect their ideas.

On Friday 6th March, 30 students from Tamworth Public School visited Tamworth Regional Art Gallery to see the exhibition Resolved: Journeys in Australian Design and meet Resolved designer Bic Tieu.

Students took part in a hands on Design Emergency workshop with Bic and Object team members Rose, Su-Wen & Laura.

The challenge question was: How might we protect our selves / feel safe?

A lively discussion on everything from families, houses, and eyelashes to various ways animals protect themselves was had!

The groups came up with amazing ideas and solutions related to their daily lives and created models and collages to reflect their protective stories.

Just to name a few…

Turtle shells for humans and injured turtles,
Electrical system in home to avoid shocks,
Multi functioning outfits that protect you from all weather types,
Collar to repel younger brothers from biting, and
Shields that ensure robbers bounce off it.

The power of learning by doing was empathized and our future minds certainly thought beyond what is real.

Thanks to Sunshine for the photos, Bic Tieu for sharing her design expertise, the team at Tamworth Regional Art Gallery, and all the kids for taking part!
